Working on WORK!

Elliot is furiously working away on the next Abandon page at the moment. But he and I are also working on another project: a piece for the upcoming WORK! Anthology. The pic above is the one of the first very rough sketches of the main character, Adala.

The WORK! anthology is a collection of short comics stories inspired by songs about work and the working classes. WORK! is scheduled for publication in 2009. MySpace page for the anthology is HERE and the blog is HERE. (Caution: some of the art there is very NSFW.) I’m the writer and Elliot is the artist for a piece inspired by “Cowboy’s Wild Song to His Herd” by The Carter Family. It includes a traditional cowboy song also, “When the Work’s All Done in the Fall.”

But I went a different direction than the standard Old West cowboys - I went to Celtiberia, circa 200 BCE. The Celtiberians were transhumant - they raised cattle and drove them to the mountains in the spring to avoid the hot dry summers in the valley where their villages were. So their lives were pretty much the same as cattle drives of the Southwest US.

I”ve written two more pieces as well with different artists. One with Gina Biggs of Red String, and another with M. Carter, a fantabulous painter and printmaker who does comics as well. More news will be coming soon here and on the UpDown Studio blog.

Lamashtu, Sumerian demon and the First Vampire, has hidden herself behind many lives. Currently she is Laila McCarthy, Professor of Ancient Cultures. On a military-led artifact recovery mission she faces the forces of an old enemy. Studying the relics with a handsome agent of the Bureau of Evil Elimination brings her ever closer to danger.”

It would be a huge help to us (and save you postage) if you have a friendly neighborhood comic shop that could order a copy from the distributor. Please have them order AFVUPD001 through Haven Distribution (www.havendistro.com). Or print this coupon and take it in:

Please Nominate Abandon: First Vampire

The Project Fanboy Awards have a webcomic category! Please nominate Abandon: First Vampire if you enjoy the comic. I’ll be at Megacon where they are announcing the awards. That would be cool. Thanks!
